PINEWOOD DERBY!
On Friday, April 11, 2008, Andrew and Dad worked hard to finish Andrew's Pinewood Derby car. The race was the next day--we turned the pine block into a pirate ship, painted it blue, put doubloons on the side and stickers all over, and added removeable masts with the skull and bones!
On Saturday, April 12, 2008, Andrew entered the race, and won second place overall for the Wolf Scouts! He also got Scoutmaster's Choice award for his creative design!
We had a lot of fun, and learned a lot about Pinewood derby car design, including a bunch of features we're going to incorporate next year (like gluing the axles into place--who knew?). |
Here's Andrew, waiting for the race to start. We're #10--the car weighed in at 3oz (the limit is 5oz, and you need to be close to it to have a fighting chance) so one of the organizers loaned us a 2oz zinc plate. I had tape in my pocket. Here are the cars all lined up--Andrew is on the far left, already on the track and rarin' to go! There's Andrew, out in front! Here's the car with the sails up, ready for judging. Happiest Man Alive, right at that moment. |
